Alright, so like, if you’ve got a car — you already know how important the engine is. I mean, it’s the heart of the whole thing right? If your engine’s not happy, the whole car’s gonna act up. Doesn’t matter if your car looks shiny or has a loud speaker system, if the engine’s messed up, it’s game over.
So here’s some tips (not too technical, don’t worry) to keep your engine healthy and running smooth. Some of these are kinda obvious, but still people ignore them. Don’t be that guy
1. Don’t Skip Oil Changes
This is like the number one rule. Engine oil is basically what keeps everything inside the engine smooth and not grinding against each other. If oil is old or low, engine parts will wear out faster.
Most people just forget to change oil on time. Either check your owner’s manual or just change it every 8k–10k km (depending on the car). And don’t just top it up — change the oil and the filter too.
Also, don’t use cheap oil just to save money. You’ll regret it later fr.
️ 2. Keep the Air Filter Clean
Your engine needs air to burn fuel properly. If the air filter is all clogged up with dust and stuff, your mileage drops and the engine struggles.
Change it every once in a while, or at least check it during service. Especially if you drive in dusty areas or cities with bad pollution.
️ 3. Watch the Temperature
Engines heat up when you drive, that’s normal. But if the temperature needle is going crazy or you’re seeing steam from the bonnet — that’s not good.
Could be low coolant, radiator issue, or something worse. Don’t keep driving if your engine’s overheating. Stop and let it cool down. Then call for help or check coolant level if you know how.
Also, make sure your coolant level is fine. Top it up when needed, but don’t open the cap when engine’s hot — unless you wanna burn your hands lol.
⛽ 4. Use Good Fuel
Okay this one people argue about but still… don’t go to shady fuel stations just because it’s 2 rupees cheaper. Sometimes that fuel is mixed or just bad quality, and it messes up the engine over time.
Stick to trusted pumps. And if your car needs premium fuel (some turbo engines do), don’t try to save money by using regular. Not worth it in the long run.
5. Don’t Drive Like You’re in Fast & Furious
Cold starts? Don’t just start the engine and speed off. Let it idle for 30–60 secs so oil can flow properly. Especially in winters.
And don’t keep revving like crazy all the time. Sure, a little fun once in a while is cool, but constantly redlining your RPM just to “feel power” will wear out engine faster than normal.
Drive smooth when you can.
6. Pay Attention to Noises
Engines don’t just go bad one day out of nowhere. Usually there’s signs — weird knocking sounds, vibrations, rough idling, loss of power. But most people just ignore it and blast music instead
If something sounds off, get it checked early. Small issues can become big (and expensive) if you delay.
7. Keep Battery in Check
Okay, not directly “engine” but still related. A weak battery can affect starting and other electrical systems. If your car struggles to start or the lights flicker, might be a sign the battery is dying.
Check the battery water levels if it’s not a sealed one. Clean the terminals if there’s rust. And don’t leave lights on when engine is off… classic mistake.
8. Service on Time (Even If It Feels Boring)
Nobody likes going for servicing. It takes time, money, and sometimes feels unnecessary if your car is “running fine.” But regular service keeps engine problems away before they even start.
Follow your service schedule — not just for oil, but for belts, fluids, spark plugs, etc. All that stuff matters.
Final Thoughts
Your engine doesn’t need fancy treatment — just basic care and attention. If you drive well, service on time, and don’t ignore warning signs, your engine will stay happy for years.
And remember: fixing a broken engine is way more expensive than maintaining a good one. So yeah, save yourself the headache.
Also, if something smells weird or sounds like it’s gonna explode… just stop driving and get it checked. Better safe than sorry.
