Homemade Rajma Chawal Recipe for the Perfect Comfort Meal

Rajma chawal is like one of the most popular comfort food in North India. Its simple, filling and tastes super yummy. If you want to make perfect rajma chawal at home that tastes just like mom’s cooking, this recipe is for you.

Rajma or kidney beans cooked in spicy thick gravy with rice is a combo that never fails. But many people find it hard to cook rajma properly or get the taste right. Dont worry, I’ll tell you easy steps to make soft rajma and tasty gravy with fluffy rice.


Ingredients You Need

For Rajma (Kidney Beans)

  • 1 cup rajma soaked overnight

  • 2 big onions (finely chopped)

  • 3 tomatoes (pureed)

  • 2 green chilies (slit)

  • 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (you can add more if u like spicy)

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder

  • 1 teaspoon garam masala

  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee

  • Salt as needed

  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

For Rice

  • 1 cup basmati rice

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 teaspoon ghee or oil

  • Salt as per taste


Step 1: Soak and Cook Rajma

Soak rajma overnight or atleast 8 hours. Drain water and rinse well.

Pressure cook rajma with 3 cups water for 5-6 whistles or till rajma become soft. If no pressure cooker, boil rajma for 1.5 to 2 hours till soft.


Step 2: Make Masala Gravy

Heat oil or ghee in pan. Add cumin seeds and wait till they splutter.

Add chopped onions and fry till golden brown.

Add ginger garlic paste and green chilies, saute till raw smell goes.

Add pureed tomatoes and cook till oil starts to separate from masala.

Add turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder and salt. Mix well.


Step 3: Add Cooked Rajma

Add cooked rajma along with water (add more if gravy too thick).

Simmer on low flame for 20-25 mins so rajma absorbs masala well.

Add garam masala and stir.


Step 4: Cook Rice

Wash basmati rice few times till water clear.

In pot or rice cooker, add rice, water, salt and ghee/oil.

Cook till rice fluffy and done.


Step 5: Serve Hot

Serve rajma hot with rice. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Rajma chawal is best comfort food specially on rainy or cold days. Add pickle or papad if u like.
